Nevada Delegate Report Cincinnati By Jayar M Tolentino, A.S., LMT
Hello AMTA Members, As the 2007 elected Delegate for Nevada, I had the opportunity to attend the AMTA National Convention in Cincinnati. Delegates from across the U.S. brought attention to certain AMTA policies to our committee chair. 134 delegates were present. In the meeting recommendations and possible amendments were delegated and voted on. In addition, Delegates also discussed the possibilities of creating a written mission statement. As the role of a delegate, I represented all the AMTA members for Nevada when it came to place a vote within the HOD meeting, it is also the delegates responsibility to remind the chapter of deadlines with recommendation requests to bring to the HOD meeting... when in this position, it is necessary for the delegate to understand the bill being brought forth, and to keep an open mind to see whether it benefits the massage therapist, or the massage therapy industry, and even the publics awareness.. IE one of the bills that passed were for the AMTA web-site to have more theory based CEH's on line than hands on based classes, because it was delegated that one can not benefit from a hands on class through the internet. Another recommendation that really lit the delegate floor was submitted by the state of New Jersey Chapter, under the AMTA policies our liability insurance can only be registered in one state only. Because of number of the therapists having to work in cities close to the borders and in different states, they wanted to be able to carry liability when they cross these state borders. But due to lack of wording in the recommendation, and the problems that were discussed like being a chapter officer in 2 states, and how would it be controlled with chapter fees... sorry to say that the recommendation failed, but do not give up hope, for national board members are aware of what was delegated. Maybe in the future the recommendation will reach the floor again, and have more details and be better written for it to be passed.
Besides the House of Delegates meeting, I was able to attend the Spinal Reflex Analysis Class lead by Dr. Frank Jarrell. “Dr. Frank” was well prepared and very thorough as well as having assistants help with the class size. The diversity in the room with therapists around the nation made me realize of how privileged I was in being there. I learned a new modality to increase the outcome and benefits to my massages, as well as learning different techniques from other well established therapists.
After the intense class, I headed down to the exhibit hall where I mingled with other massage therapists, and viewed demos put on by the vendors. There were such a big variety of vendors from Biotone to Mosby’s. it was like being in a ones stop and shop massage therapy mall.
Toward the end of the convention the Saturday Dinner Dance gave us all a chance to relax and enjoy the whole experience, and to also make “CONNECTIONS” where we dined and danced with a live band.
As the end of the year approaches, I would like thank you all for giving me the opportunity to serve as the 2007 Delegate of Nevada. I enjoy the work I continue to do and am looking forward to continuing to be part of the AMTA. With that said, I would also like to congratulate David Otto on his 2008 Delegate election for Nevada. If anyone has any questions or concerns, please contact Mr. Otto as soon as possible as the deadline to submit is near. Thanks again and Best Regards, Jayar Tolentino |
